Date Palm

Phoenix dactylifera is a palm in the genus Phoenix, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit that is also high in nutrition. In some countries, virtually every part of the tree is utilized to make functional items.

Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, date palm probably originated from lands around Iraq.

The most important date cultivars are grown mainly in Africa and Asia and in a small way in North America.

Given that date and date palm have extensive uses, there is a growing demand for the palms.

There are 3 techniques to propagate date palms: seed (sexual propagation), offshoot (vegetative propagation) and tissue culture (in vitro propagation). Of these, the tissue culture technique has many advantages.
